DMI : Delta Music Institute
The DMI is a first step towards a broad program in Media Arts Production. It began with a generous donation by Fred Carl of Viking Range Company in 2003. Our program is currently focused on recording arts and music industry studies. Whether producing their own art or the art of others, our alumni will be well prepared for the technical, business, and legal issues that confront the practicing artist today and in the future.
DMI Director Tricia Walker spent over 25 years in Nashville as an award winning singer/songwriter, publisher and producer before returning to Delta State in 2006 to direct the DMI program. Her songs have been featured on Grammy winning and platinum recordings by artists such as Faith Hill and Allison Krauss, and she has worked as a backing musician with Shania Twain, Connie Smith, and others. She also tours her one woman show, “The Heart of Dixie,” throughout the country.
Using state of the art technology with professional instruction, the Delta Music Institute will revolutionize the way students learn about music and the music industry.
“Classes at the DMI will remind our students of the rich musical heritage of the Mississippi Delta. Our graduates will be encouraged to take bits and pieces of that history, combine it with their own personal talents, and hopefully, create the next great chapter of Mississippi music.”
